what is the ratio of the number of cups of flour to the number of cups of sugar required in a certain cake recipe?

1) The number of cups of flour required in the recipe is 250% of the number of cups of sugar required in the recipe.

2) 1.5 more cups of flour than cups of sugar are required in the recipe

The answer is A.
My question is why not D.

statement 2 also gives a proportion by saying that there are 1.5 cups of flour needed for the total amount of cups of sugar. if sugar cups = x. then the ration would be

1.5+x/ x

x->cups of flour
y->cups of sugar

Stmt II is saying


y + 1.5 = x

Number of cups of sugar + 1.5 more cups will give u the number of cups of flour

We cant find the ratio from this

1. Let x be the no of cups of floor
y be the no of cups of sugar
x = 250/100 * (y)

x/y = 5/2

hence you can find the ratio

2. say

x + something = y

you cannot deduce x/y


So IMO A

Tj, you have your formula wrong, the formula should be (1.5+x)/x not 1.5+x/x.
Statement 2 says 1.5 more cups of flour than sugar. Look at the following 2 examples that would give you completely different ratios
S: 1.5 --> F: 3 Ratio 3/1.5--> 2
Another choice could be S:98.5--> F:100 Ratio 100/98.5 (which is closer to 1)
