Must be E

ranges for X can be 450 - 550
ranges for Y can be 350 - 450

Stmt 1: Given X < 500 ... X can be between 450 - 500. Combining this range w the range for Y results in multiple possible answers

Stmt 2: Given Y < 400 ... Y can be between 350 - 400
Same problem as in Stmt 1

Combined:
X ---> between 450 - 500
Y ---> between 350 - 400

Still not clear where the sum of X & Y falls.
350 + 450 = 800
500 + 400 = 900

Answer E - what is the OA?

we have the following 4 possibilites
for x and y having nearest values to 500 and 400 resp.

# X Y X+Y(nearest multiple of 100)
A 451 449 900
B 451 351 800
C 549 449 1000
D 549 351 900

clearly neither option is sufficient as :
1) gives A and B
2) gives B and D

But, taking them together we get option B...hence IMO the answer is C..
please let me know if i am wrong
