I was driving along the highway at 60 miles per hour. A patrolman clocked me on his radar detector and, after deliberating for a while, started chasing me at 62 mph. When he started chasing me, I was 5 mikes ahead of him. How long before he caught up with me?

Hi talaangoshtari,

What is the source of this question? I ask because it's not written in proper GMAT 'style', doesn't include the 5 answer choices and actually asks a vague question (Is 'how long' a reference to distance or time?). To properly train for the Official GMAT, you should stick to studying with well-written GMAT materials.

Why would this police officer wait until the suspect was 5 miles away to begin chasing? (And how would the police officer then find the suspect?) :)

Let's take the numbers at face value. If the police officer is traveling at 62 mph, and you're traveling at 60mph, then the officer is making up 2 miles each hour. If the police officer needs to make up 5 miles in total, and he makes up 2 miles each hour, it will take him 2.5 hours to catch up.

R * T = D
2 * T = 5
T = 5/2 = 2.5

(Which would be the longest high-speed chase in history.)

Here's a catch-up problem from the Official Guide, if you're interested:

Car A is 20 miles behind Car B, which is traveling in the same direction along the same route as Car A. Car A is traveling at a constant speed of 58 miles per hour and Car B is traveling at a constant speed of 50 miles per hour. How many hours will it take for Car A to overtake and drive 8 miles ahead of Car B?

(A) 1.5

(B) 2.0

(C) 2.5

(D) 3.0

(E) 3.5
