Since avoiding overreacting doesn't make sense ( it should have been avoiding overreaction ) , so 3 and 4 are out.

Or for many of us who may not find avoiding overreacting awkward............. The valid option should have been
putting the news coverage into perspective, and avoiding overeacting, and to turn.......

. here connector "and" should have been there after perspective.

Now we have four verbs here to discuss , putting , avoid and to turn

Here I would have prefferred and option which had

to discuss the dusturbing event with them, putting the news coverage into perspective and avoiding overreaction ( or avoiding overeacting ) ,and to turn.....................

because putting and avoiding seems to be telling us, how the parents should discuss the even with the kid.

But since we don't have any option like that and we are 100% sure that putting the news.... is surely telling us how to discuss the event.... so will keep it as "putting" and will make "avoid" parellel to "to discuss and to turn"

hence will opt for 2

First when I saw this problem, for first 10 seconds I thought E as the answer. However, if you see carefully E is great trap. Why? non-underline sentence clearly tells us that 'psychologists advise' a list to parents and each part of the list starting with 'to'.

If that is the case then in any answer choices we do not have 'to put'. However, I can see 'to avoid'. This clearly means that 'put' is not used as verb but rather used as participle. Therefore, E is out and only B makes sense.

It took me more than 1 minute, but good question.
