According to a study published by Dr. Myrna Weissman, only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four.
(A) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four
(B) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five; if they are born since 1955, six percent become depressed by age twenty-four
(C) of Americans born before 1905, only one percent of them have suffered major depression by age seventy-five, but six percent of those born since 1955 do by the age of twenty-four
(D) major depression is suffered by the age of seventy-five by only one percent of Americans born before 1905, and by age twenty-four by the six percent born since 1955

This was asked before but I couldn't understand the explanation in that post.

IMO D

Only D is parallel and have the right tense


A) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four



(B) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five; if they are born since 1955, six percent become depressed by age twenty-four

awkward....wrong if usage

(C) of Americans born before 1905, only one percent of them have suffered major depression by age seventy-five, but six percent of those born since 1955 do by the age of twenty-four

Wrong usage of do; have here is auxiliary

(D) major depression is suffered by the age of seventy-five by only one percent of Americans born before 1905, and by age twenty-four by the six percent born since 1955

Parralel

(E) Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five only one percent of the time, but six percent of those born since 1955 did so by age twenty-four

Not parallel

IMO A.

(A) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four

Two independent clauses separated with semicolon.


(B) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five; if they are born since 1955, six percent become depressed by age twenty-four

(C) of Americans born before 1905, only one percent of them have suffered major depression by age seventy-five, but six percent of those born since 1955 do by the age of twenty-four.

But should introduce a contrast and have 2 independent clauses

(D) major depression is suffered by the age of seventy-five by only one percent of Americans born before 1905, and by age twenty-four by the six percent born since 1955

Passive . It is too complex and has too many uses of by

(E) Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five only one percent of the time, but six percent of those born since 1955 did so by age twenty-four

i will go with A..

D changes the meaning that "age of seventy-five " suffered major depression.
Also it has a "passive " tense which is not preferred in gmat.


A) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four .

A uses past perfect tenses pertaining to the time frame depicted by the prepositions "before" and "since".

B)only one percent of Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five; if they are born since 1955, six percent become depressed by age twenty-four


c) one percent of Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five; if they are born since 1955, six percent become depressed by age twenty-four

D) major depression is suffered by the age of seventy-five by only one percent of Americans born before 1905, and by age twenty-four by the six percent born since 1955

(E) Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five only one percent of the time, but six percent of those born since 1955 did so by age twenty-four

IMO A.

B: suffer wrong use of present tense. 'if they are born ... twenty-four' seems like 'they' is referring to Americans born before 1905. Also, wrong conditional clause formation, correct one, : if + present + then + will + simple verb.

C: have suffered looks like all of them are still alive. 1955 do by the Americans born after 1955 do something to get depressed.

D: 'Major depression' can't be the subject. Also, non-parallel: 'by the age...by only one percent ... by age twenty-four by the ...'


E: distorts the meaning, 'suffer major depression ... only one percent of the time'

But there is "past perfect " tense in A ....
My doubt is Why are we using past perfect tense when there are no two (past)actions taking place

am I missing something here? :?

Events took place before the "study published"

(C) of Americans born before 1905, only one percent of them have suffered major depression by age seventy-five, but six percent of those born since 1955 do by the age of twenty-four

C is a horrible choice :)

have suffered means they still SUFFER

and DO is not parallel with HAVE!

In option A, "of" is used in 'by the age of seventy-five', but not in 'by age twenty-four'. If "of" implied in 'by age twenty-four'?
Similar issue is present in other options as well.

I don't understand why A is correct..??
It contains "Since" and the Past perfect tense in the 2 clause, whereas 'Since" only take the present perfect tense (As per the rules)

Can anybody please explain...

I am a novice but IMO, using past perfect makes sense here because if you apply logic, there are two past events indicated:

- Born before 1905 (past)
- Suffered depression by the age of 75 (past)

Correct me if I am wrong.

BTW, options C, D, E don't fit in and B implies that American still suffer which is incorrect. Hence answer has to be "A"

I see tense issue in all answer choices except A
First, non underline portion is,
According to a study published by Dr. Myrna Weissman = simple past tense

B. .... suffer = simple present
Also, if -condition is awkward.
C. suffer = simple present
D. is suffered = present + passive
E. suffer = simple present

Option (A) is the correct choice asit uses past perfect tense because major depression or its effect is continuous and both of these sentences are independent and related as we are talking about Americans.Hence (a).
