(1) Consider x = 1, y = 1. |1| = |1| and 1 = 1 so x=y.

Now consider x = 1, y=-1. |1| = |-1| but 1 does not equal -1.

Insufficient.

(2) Again, consider x = 1, y = 1. 1^2 = 1^ and 1 = 1.

Now consider x = 1, y = -1. 1^2 = (-1)^2 but 1 does not equal -1.

Insufficient.

(1)+(2) Apply the same cases that were used in (1) and (2) and you'll get the same outcome. So the answer is E.
