do i need an alternate transcript?

by deeptideepti » Tue Jun 21, 2011 12:01 pm
I have a 740 GMAT score. However, my academic history is poor. I went to Carneige Mellon Engineering and graduated with a 2.87 in Computer Engineering with several Failing grades.

Later, I completed my Master's part-time taking evening classes while working full-time. My GPA here is 3.7. However, I took 5 and half years to complete my part-time master's as I took classes on and off due to financial reasons etc.

Do I need an alternate transcript? If I do, do I need to take graduate level classes or undergraduate classes. Also, what kind of classes should I take?

Thanks a lot for reading my post and helping me.

Hello,

First, the excellent GMAT helps a lot. Second, your grad transcript is in a sense an alternate transcript. Its GPA is fine, but you note the long time frame. If the master's involved rigorous quant and/or analytic coursework, and you got good grades in these classes, that will help a lot too, and you would not need alternative transcript. Regardless, I suggest writing an optional essay acknowledging (and succinctly explaining) the low undergrad GPA and explaining the reason for the extended grad time frame (I assume working).

That said, taking a challenging business-related course or two such as accounting or microeconomics (if you haven't already) and earning an A can only help, even with good graduate grades and strong GMAT. The actual necessity will be less, but it still will enhance your candidacy, not just by further underscoring academic capability but by demonstrating your commitment and seriousness regarding the MBA.

Thanks a lot Cindy for your input.
Can you please let me know if the business-related classes I should take to build an alternate transcript should be undergrad level or grad level. Can I take pre-MBA classes?

My master's was in Engineering. Yes, I was working full-time while pursuing a Master's degree in the evening. So, I took classes on and off and therefore took more than 5 years to complete my Master's program through evening classes on-campus.

Thanks a lot.
