So what exactly does that mean?? Does that outside company call?? Or do they just do a background type check where they pull up your employment info with a social security number?

B-schools will not contact your current employer directly. They are well aware that many people cannot tell their current employers about their plans to attend MBA programs.

The background checks are usually outsourced to a 3rd party that specializes in handling background checks. The background checks are conducted via a confidential process.

Check with your HR department, they will know how the process is handled. If you are not comfortable talking to HR, you can usually find it via their forms, paperwork, and/or website. They publish this process because there are many reasons to conduct an employment check (e.g. mortgages).

It is all confidential - your current employer and manager will have no notification about the background check.
