In an attempt to promote the widespread use of paper rather than plastic, and thus reduce non-biodegradable waste, the council of a small town plans to ban the sale of disposable plastic goods for which substitutes made of paper exist. The council argues that since most paper is entirely biodegradable, paper goods are environmentally preferable.

Which of the following,if true, indicates that the plan to ban the sale of disposable plastic goods is suited to the town council's environmental goals?

(A) Although biodegradable plastic goods are now available, members of the town council believe biodegradable paper goods to be safer for the environment.

(B) The paper factory at which most of the townspeople are employed plans to increase production of biodegradable paper goods.

(C) After other towns enacted similar bans on the sale of plastic goods, the environmental benefits were not discernible for several years.

(D) Since most townspeople prefer plastic goods to paper goods in many instances, they are likely to purchase them in neighboring towns where plastic goods are available for sale.

(E) Products other than those derived from wood pulp are often used in the manufacture of paper goods that are entirely biodegradable

Pls post your answer with explanation..thanks

IMO - E ?

A) stmt talks about the belief of the council, doesn't indicate that the plan to ban the sale of disposable plastic goods is suited to the town council's environmental goal. - not correct

B) plan to ban the plastic goods vs. plan to increase production of paper goods - not correct

C) changes were not visible for several years (but ultimately benefits showed up!) - suspect

D) this does not indicate the ban is suited - not correct

E) Clearly states the paper is bio degradable - correct

welcome any counter args !, suggestions ? Opinions!

Only E makes sense here. The argument mentions that "The council argues that since most paper is entirely biodegradable, paper goods are environmentally preferable"

the council emphasizes that paper goods are preferable because they are entirely biodegradable, and E confirms that by stating that products used for paper goods are entirely biodegradable.

A - Does not support the argument, if it is true why enact the law in the first place?
B - It does not support the argument that the law is enacted to protect the environment. If true, it will weaken that argument.
C- Goes completely against the argument that the law will help in achieving environmental goals
D - Seriously Weakens the argument if true
E - Supports the argument that the law will help in achieving environmental goals since almost all paper products are biodegradable

This question is not correct. This is from OG 11 and rather than suited it should be ill suited. OA is D

Thanks to reply2spg for pointing out the source. It seems you are already done with OG11..:)

Actually, I encountered this problem at this link: https://totalgadha.com/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=7604

I posted my solution there too, but I wanted to be sure about my answer. I couldn't find this Q anywhere else(missed QG11 of course). Good that we approached problem correct..thanks

I have a doubt in the question as it was presented,

How does the option E strengthen the argument?

(E) Products other than those derived from wood pulp are often used in the manufacture of paper goods that are entirely biodegradable

In GMAT, people say any modifier that is not differentiated from the main statement with a comma is an essential modifier.
So in the above,"that are entirely biodegradable" should be an essential modifier.

So my question is "does this option mean all the paper goods are bio-degradable?"

as per my understanding this option is trying to give us some information about the composition of the paper goods that are entirely bio-degradable which does not give me enough information about the non-biodegradable paper goods.

So does this strengthen the argument?if it does, how?

Rahul ,

Yeah agreed OA shuld be D but for weakening the argument. whereas here it asks for " strengthen" the argument. SO go with E

sumanr84 inadvertently pasted the question without knowing that one word, a pretty important one, was missed out. the question is 'ill suited', not suited.
