What is the value of the tenths digit of number x?

(1) The hundredths digit of x is 5
(2) Number x, rounded to the nearest tenth, is 54.5

*what should I be looking at "tenth digit before decimal or after.." this is very confusing..

Rommy, to the left of the decimal is the ones and then the tens digit. To the right of the decimal is the tenths digit.

A tenth or 1/10 is a fractional amount that can be expressed as .1.

Teth digit is basically 1/10, so that will make it the first digit after the decimal.
Tens digit will be the 2nd digit before the decimal

142.85
Here 4 is the tens digit and 8 is the tenth digit.

Hi rommysingh,

In this prompt, we're asked for the TENTHS digit of X? This question asks for the digit that is to the IMMEDIATE RIGHT of the decimal point.

Fact 1: The hundredths digit of X is 5

This tells us NOTHING about the tenths digit - that digit could be any integer from 0 to 9, inclusive.

eg.
X = _.05
X = _.15
X = _.25
...
X = _.95
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

Fact 2: Number X, rounded to the nearest tenth, is 54.5

This Fact discusses ROUNDING. If the hundredths digit is 0-4, then we 'round down'; if the hundredths digit is 5-9, then we 'round up.'

eg.
IF.....
X = 54.49, then we would 'round up' to 54.5

X = 54.53, then we would 'round down' to 54.5

Thus, the tenths digit could be 4 or 5.
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
The hundredths digit of X is 5
Number X, rounded to the nearest tenth, is 54.5

Since the hundredths digit is 5, that means that we would have to round UP to get to 54.5. Thus, X could only be 54.45
Combined, SUFFICIENT

Final Answer: C

Just to specifically answer your question. Any digit that ends in 'th' is speaking of values to the right of the decimal.

in combining both the statements,

Why the number can't be 54.55 since rounding it to tenth digit will give 54.5

I think answer should be E

Any value of x such that 0.45 ≤ x < 0.55 is rounded to 0.5.
Any value of x such that 0.55 ≤ x < 0.65 is rounded to 0.6.
Any value of x such that 0.65 ≤ x < 0.75 is rounded to 0.7.
Any value of x such that 0.75 ≤ x < 0.85 is rounded to 0.8.

54.55 is governed by the option in red.
Rounded to the nearest tenth, 54.55 --> 54.6.
Thus, 54.55 does not satisfy statement 2.
