Despite entering the courthouse with police escort, the lead attorney and his assistant, manhandled by an aggressive crowd of reporters that bombarded him with questions, was injured seriously enough to warrant immediate medical attention.

Please explain why Answer B is correct over answer E, despite the fact that "despite the fact" in B is wordy ? Pardon me, if this is not the correct place to post this question ?

Rajibgmat,

This is a little tough one, but if you read ans E properly

the lead attorney and his assistant were manhandled by an aggressive crowd of reporters that bombarded him

the word "him" does it for me. the lead attorney and his assitant is compound,

and the pronoun "him" is not clear if it refers to assistant or the lead attorney.

Hence the choice B

i agree that 'the fact that' is considered wordy, but if you take a closer look, all the other options contain either a pronoun error, or a subject-verb agreement problem. so, by the process of elimination, B is the best answer.
