Demonstration of Leadership Skills

Hi Stacey,

I was wondering what level of leadership skills are demanded by top business schools. I have been managing a 4-5 people in my company. But I believe that managing a few resources isn't actually leadership. Some manager might not be leader but mere experience in industry gives them opportunity to lead.

I don't have any great evidence of my leadership skills. Just small stories on how I managed to take control in difficult situation and steer the outcome to right direction. But I am not convinced that top MBA schools might be interested in listening this type of stories. Out of thousands of applicants, this type of stories really don't stand out loud.
I don't have any fancy example of how did I raise 500 K dollars for hurricane victims or how did I saved a couple of million dollars of my company by taking a right decision on right time etc.. (Although, I am sure I did save them a lot of money overtime).

As you have vast experience dealing with MBA applicants, in your opinion, do successful applicants of top business schools share a fancy evidence of their leadership skills ?

Dear HumbleMe,

There is no exact definition of leadership or threshold of scope you must cross when it comes to your leadership potential. Business schools are looking for evidence of leadership and concrete examples if you have them. You might feel your examples are "small", but the size is relative to the situation. Taking control of a difficult project and leading it to successful completion is a great example. While you might think it is not significant to your organization, it probably is as all projects are done for a reason. The applicants with the stories of raising $1M for a charity are rare--it is the daily actions of leadership you take that lead to your successful career and impact the company's success.
