is this sentence correct ?

Hammerhead sharks have declined by 89 percent since 1986, a rate even more alarming than that of white sharks (79 percent) and tiger sharks (65 percent).

I dont think so. I see parallelism error between Hammerhead sharks...rate of white sharks.. and tiger sharks..
Being defeated is often only a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

My thoughts on this

Later part could undergo a correction. - "a rate even more alarming than that of white sharks (79 percent) and that of tiger sharks (65 percent)."
However , the position of the later part starting from "a rate ....." is after 1986.. obviously that is not the rate..
So, in my opinion , the correct sentence could be like
Since 1986, Hammerhead sharks have declined by 89 percent , a rate even more alarming than that of white sharks (79 percent) and that of tiger sharks (65 percent)

Please let me know the correction that was prescribed by the source of this question

this is from scientific American. I wonder if the use of a rate of is correct ?
