Declaration of Sentiments ...

When drafting the Declaration of Sentiments that was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Riqhts Convention in 1848, included in it by the author, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was a call for female enfranchisement.

A) When drafting the Declaration of Sentiments that was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848, included in it by the author, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was a call for female enfranchisemi

B) Including a call for female enfranchisement, a draft of the Declaration of Sentiments was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848 that Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote.

C) When the Declaration of Sentiments drafted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Convention in 1848, a call for female enfranchisement had been included in it.

D) A call for female enfranchisement, included in Elizabeth Cady Stanton's draft of the Declaration of Sentiments in 1848, that was adopted by the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention.

E) When Elizabeth Cady Stanton drafted the Declaration of Sentiments that was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848, she included in it a call for female enfranchisement.


OA : E though I am convinced .. but like to hear thoughts why E ?

When ECS drafted X, she included in it Y (she refers to ECS)

X = the Declaration of Sentiments that was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848

Y = a call for female enfranchisement.

Isn't there a pronoun problem in E? Does the pronoun "it" refer to the draft or the convention?

Though it seems confusing, pronouns refer to the intended noun in sentences with such parallel structures.

When ECS drafted the declaration that was adopted at the convention, she included in it X.

drafted || included

"she" refers to "ECS" and "it" refers to "declaration".

The intend of the original sentence is to say that AUTHOR INCLUDED A CALL WHEN SHE DRAFTED THE DECLARATION. This fact is reinforced by using WHEN - that indicates SIMULTANOUS ACTION WITH SOME OTHER ACTION.

C - sentence use WAS ADOPTED...HAD BEEN INCLUDED (this means she included A CALL before she adopted the draft. Can it be possible?

E - WAS ADOPTED....INCLUDED (same tense suggesting that both action happened at the same time).

smodak, the idea of pronoun ambiguity is a tricky one on the GMAT. Sometimes the GMAT tests the issue (as in #68 in the Verbal Supplement guide), but more often than not, they ignore the issue. If the meaning could truly go either way, it's ambiguity. For example:

The dog was chewing on my shoe, so I put it in the other room.

I could put the dog or the shoe in the room, so there's genuine confusion.

In this case, it's pretty clear from a meaning perspective that "it" refers to the "declaration" and not "convention." It helps that "declaration" is the object, while "convention" is tucked away in a modifying prepositional phrase. So don't worry about pronoun ambiguity here.

B) Including a call for female enfranchisement, a draft of the Declaration of Sentiments was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848 that Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote. - That starts a clause- verb missing;

C) When the Declaration of Sentiments drafted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Convention in 1848, a call for female enfranchisement had been included in it. - had been is wrong here.

D) A call for female enfranchisement, included in Elizabeth Cady Stanton's draft of the Declaration of Sentiments in 1848, that was adopted by the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention. -It means that call was adopted. Original sentence says that draft was adopted

E) When Elizabeth Cady Stanton drafted the Declaration of Sentiments that was adopted at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848, she included in it a call for female enfranchisement. - Correct choice

Hi Experts ,

Just a quick question.

Why do we need a SHE after comma in OA? I know that she refers to ECS.

Please advise.

if we don't keep she then
it would mean as
Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848, included -- convention included the call which is not the intended meaning.
