David has 11 more nickels than quarters. How many coins does he have?

(1) The total value of David's coins is $2.65?

(2) The total value of the quarters with David is a nickel short of 18 dimes.

All GMATiers must note:

One Dollar = 100 cents = 20 Nickels = 10 Dimes = 4 Quarters

Assume x quarters, y nickels
y = x +11

(1) The total value of David's coins is $2.65?
x(1/4) + y(1/20) = 2.65
5x+y = 53
y-x=11

2 eqtns, 2 variables.. x, y can be determined.
SUFF

(2) The total value of the quarters with David is a nickel short of 18 dimes.
x/4 = 18/10-1/20
x/4=35/20
x=7
hence y=18

this is a very specific question with regards to the American currency which not all people around the world who would be taking the GMAT can be expected to be aware of.
