Healthy lungs produce a natural antibiotic that protects them from infection by routinely killing harmful bacteria on airway surfaces. People with cystic fibrosis, however, are unable to fight off such bacteria, even though their lungs produce normal amounts of the antibiotic. The fluid on airway surfaces in the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis has an abnormally high salt concentration; accordingly, scientists hypothesize that the high salt concentration is what makes the antibiotic ineffective.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the scientists’ hypothesis?

* When the salt concentration of the fluid on the airway surfaces of healthy people is raised artificially, the salt concentration soon returns to normal.
* A sample of the antibiotic was capable of killing bacteria in an environment with an unusually low concentration of salt.
* When lung tissue from people with cystic fibrosis is maintained in a solution with a normal salt concentration, the tissue can resist bacteria.
* Many lung infections can be treated by applying synthetic antibiotics to the airway surfaces.
* High salt concentrations have an antibiotic effect in many circumstances.

Why not B?
IMO C.

According to me, It would not be B b/c it doesn't confirm the scientist's hypothesis that high salt concentration hinders the antibiotic ability.

antibiotic is effective in low concentration, but what about high concentration?

choice C proves the scientists hypothesis b/c it says that if salt concentration was brought down in cystic fibrosis patients, then antibiotics work. which means "unusually high salt concentration" was the problem to begin with.

Hypothesis-> Higher salt conc makes antibodies ineffective and they are unable to kill the bacteria


Choice B does not strengthen the hypothesis as it just says the bacteria are killed in low salt concentrations. This does not stnegthen the hypothesis that the high salt conc is what makes antibodies ineffective and they are unable to kill the bacteria



C strengthens it by saying when normal conc of salt is restored(from high to normal) then the tissue(through the prodn of antibodies) does kill the bacteria. More specific also deals with cystic fibrosis individuals

Let me know if I am missing something from how u think it is B

Choice B talks about the low salt concentration and tells us that bacteria are killed.
But the consideration has to be about the high salt and this option does not talk about high salt concentration. Therefore we cannot say anything about what will happen n the case of a high concentration.

Hence we cannot strengthen the hypothesis.

C on the other hand says that the normal concentration DOES kill the bacteria.
