For the past 50 years, the fujiko produce company has sold its mandarin oranges worldwide. In an effort to increase its profits the company proposes to discontinue its practice of wrapping each orange in tissue paper.

Which of the following provides the strongest support for the company's proposed strategy?

1.Wrapping oranges in tissue paper reduces the rate at which the rot

2.Most consumers are concerned about excess packaging

3.It costs the fujiko company more than one million dollars each year to individually wrap its oranges in tissue paper

4.Consumers will continue to buy mandarin oranges that are not wrapped in tissue paper

5. The worldwide consumption of mandarin oranges has steadily increased every year since 1978

IMO 4
1. Orange will rot so not favorable
2. Consumers obsessed with packaging will not buy then when wrapper removed
3. This wrapping cost reduces profit
4. Still consumers buy
5. Does not relate to the concerned company; just a fact

can someone please explain why not 3 ? i thought that option 4 would be right if the question were an assumption question . . So i had 3 as my answer

In my understanding:

If the company does not wrap each orange in tissue paper, it will save cost. => This is obvious. But, reducing in cost does not ensure that the company can get more profit. What if its revenue reduces too?

So 3 repeats what is assumed in the premise: stop wrapping --> reduce cost.
3 just give out a specific amount of cost that will be saved : more than one million dollars each year

In order to strengthen a sentence, you need something other than those stated in the premise.
4 does. As we all know that the stop of wrapping will reduce cost, then if the revenue ( or you can say: Consumers will continue to buy mandarin oranges that are not wrapped in tissue paper ) remains unchanged, the profit will rise.

IMO if this question were an assumption one, the author would assume that " the wrapping paper has no or few effects in preserving/protecting oranges".

Hope it helps.

the company can make profits if it can retain its customer base even without investing in tissue paper that is used for wrapping. the savings in the tissue paper expenses will contribute to the rise in profits. so in my view 4 i.e. Consumers will continue to buy mandarin oranges that are not wrapped in tissue paper is the answer
