Critical Error

I recently took the GMAT and made the mistake of leaving one question unanswered in the math section. I had several minutes remaining and got caught up in rechecking the answer to be absolutely sure I was correct, then when I went to make my selection time expired!

I ended up scoring a 720, but I am still upset about the error. Just out of morbid curiousity, does anyone know how many points this error cost me? I verified that my answer would have been correct, so I assume this would be close to a 20 point swing.

Any thoughts???

MBAClassof11,

I had earlier made this point on the forums.. there is a severe penalty for not completing any section.. since you did not answer one question, it might have brought your score by 5 percentile...In any case, 720 is a very good score!!!

yeh I heard that it's a 3 percentile swing.

Inidentally, when you get to the last question, you should select any answer and then start working on it. If the time runs out without you clicking confirm, does this point count or not?

Does anyone know?

Thanks for the input, that's basically what I was thinking as well. I don't think it accepts an answer until you hit the confirm button. So even if I had selected an answer if time expired without hitting confirm, I don't think the points would count.

you lost 13 points...how sad. Now the Adcom will look at your 720 score and wont even consider your application

I remember seeing a post on this site regarding a similar thing but with the AWA section. On their real test, someone didn't click confirm in time and the section moved on. However, his essay was marked and GMAC confirmed this.

I guess it could be different for the quant/vebal sections.

I can confirm that it does work this way on the AWA section - I clicked confirm but didn't have time to hit "ok" - my score was still graded and a test administrator confirmed that whatever was down when time ran out would be evaluated. Sorry this doesn't necessarily help with whether or not it works the same way on quant/verbal.

whether or not is redundant my friend.... whether is preferred here
