CR- Vacation

Expert replies
by virgo80 » Sun May 03, 2009 11:33 am
This summer, Jennifer, who has worked at KVZ Manufacturing for just over three years, plans to spend with her family the entire four weeks of paid vacation to which she is entitled this year. Anyone who has worked at KVZ Manufacturing for between one and four years is automatically entitled to exactly three weeks paid vacation each year but can apply up to half of any vacation time that remains unused at the end of one year to the next year’s vacation.
If the statements above are all true, which one of the following must also be true on the basis of them?

Jennifer did not use two weeks of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled past year
If Jennifer continues to work for KVZ Manufacturing, she will only be entitled to three weeks paid vacation next year
The majority of KVZ’s employees use each year all of the paid vacation time to which they are entitled
Last year Jennifer took only one week of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled
KVZ Manufacturing sometimes allows extra vacation time to employees who need to spend more time with their families

A. Jennifer did not use two weeks of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled past year

C. The majority of KVZ’s employees use each year all of the paid vacation time to which they are entitled
D. Last year Jennifer took only one week of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled
E. KVZ Manufacturing sometimes allows extra vacation time to employees who need to spend more time with their families

My answer:B

Minimum carry forward: 2 weeks (to top-up 1 week + 3 weeks assuming she'd not taken any vacation this year yet)
Maximum carry forward: 3 weeks (or more, depending on whether compounding from all previous years is allowed).

Therefore, she did not use between 2 and 3+ weeks of vacation last year, but we cannot tell for certain the number. eliminates A,D.
Information in C,E is nowhere mentioned in situation.
B: situation says that she'll be using all of the vacation time, so there will not be any carry forward time next year.

What about A?
She has 3 weeks of vacation this year. if She has not used up last year's two weeks of vacation, then carry would be one this year, and she will have 4 complete weeks of vacation. I am not sure of B because next year Jennifer will complete 4 years with KYZ so she will be entitled for 4 full weeks of vacation..

Jennifer did not use two weeks of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled past year
A is correct
firstly as per the argument a employee can use half of the paid vacations next year and this is exactly what this option states

If Jennifer continues to work for KVZ Manufacturing, she will only be entitled to three weeks paid vacation next year
this cannot be implied

The majority of KVZ’s employees use each year all of the paid vacation time to which they are entitled
again this cannot be inferred

Last year Jennifer took only one week of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled
this statement contradicts the argument

KVZ Manufacturing sometimes allows extra vacation time to employees who need to spend more time with their families
cannot be inferred

IMO A

OA is A

I was mixed up with D, i thought D and A were saying the same thing. D says

last year Jennifer took only one week of the paid vacation time to which she was entitled

I interpreted it as - Jennifer took 1 week of vacation out of the 3 weeks and so is left with 2.

Agree with thetrystero

Are you sure OA is correct?

If it is , then why D is wrong? If jennifer took only 1 week off last year then still the argument holds.

Anyone plz?

D is wrong because she could have been entitled to say 4 weeks of holidays considering that she did not use 2 weeks of holidays from 2nd year. We can't be sure of how many holidays she carried forward from last year.

damn, 4 year limit slipped my mind.

and "entire 4 weeks entitled" implies that she'd not eaten in to any of her vacation time this year yet, so answer is definitely A.
