Which of the following best completes the passage below?
the most serious flaw in television’s coverage of election campaigns is its tendency to focus on the horse-race side of politics—that is, to concentrate on the question “Who’s winning?” at the expense of substantive coverage of the issues and the candidates’ positions on them. The endless interviews with campaign managers, discussions of campaign strategies, and, especially, the obsession with opinion polls have surrounded elections with the atmosphere of a football game or a prizefight. To reform this situation, a first step might well be______

(A) a shortening of the length of election campaigns to a period of six weeks
(B) a stringent limit on campaign spending
(C) a reduction in the television coverage of opinion polls during election campaigns
(D) the publication and distribution of voter-education literature to inform the public about each candidate’s position on the major issues
(E) a limit on the length and number of political advertisements broadcast on television

correct ans given is C , why not D ?

People usually focus on "who's winnng?" and they are obsessed with "opinion poll". These indicate the flaw of the tv's coverage of election campaign.

then what can we do to improve this situation? Yup, we can limit or reduce the tv coverage of opinion polls during election campaigns. so C is correct. Informing the public does not solve the problems. Even if people are well informed, those political buzz will still continue to focus on opion polls no matter what.

This is a tricky one. C and D being the contenders.

C rules over D beacuse there is a shift in scope with D i.e creating public awareness by informing them of the issues.

C is more closely aligned with the passage premise that there is a serious flaw in television’s coverage of election campaigns as it tends to project who's winning(i.e opinion polls are one way to do that).

The answer must best summarize the author's argument which is who's winning coverage of the elections.

Hope this helps!

I think it is C as well because D is irrelevant as it discusses public's perception vs. media.

I would go with option C as the correct option
