Tony: A short story is little more than a novelist's sketch pad. Only novels have narrative structures that allow writers to depict human lives accurately by portraying characters whose personalities gradually develop through life experience.

Raoul: Life consists not of a linear process of personality development, but rather of a series of completely disjointed vignettes, from many of which the discerning observer may catch glimpses of character. Thus, the short story depicts human lives more faithfully than does the novel.

The dialogue most supports the claim that Tony and Raoul disagree about whether
(A) human lives are best understood as series of completely disjointed vignettes
(B) novels and short stories employ the same strategies to depict human lives
(C) novels usually depict gradual changes in characters' personalities

IMO A.

Let's look at other answers first
B. Does Tony disagree with that? No, he himself draws attention that only novels have narrative structure that "allows..." Does Raoul disagree with that? No he agrees with tony that short story is actually different way of presenting human lives and he describes the difference.
C. Again... Tony agrees with this and Raoul does not disagree with Tony on this subject
D. we don't know neither Tony nor Raoul discusses this subject
E. we don't know neither Tony nor Raoul discusses this subject

Now why A?
Tony says only novels " depict human lives accurately" because it allows to depict how personalities develop gradually.
On the other hand Raoul says that short stories " depicts human lives more faithfully than does the novel" because the short story is series of completely disjointed vignettes ".

Now if you look at these speakers have different reasons for their claims, and the difference is that Raoul believes human lives are better depicted / best understood with series of completely disjointed vignettes while Tony believes this is not the case, he believes that lives can be better understood if it is depicted how personalities develop trough life experience. Therefore I choose A

I think A, I kicked out B because I thought that the two authors concede that short stories and and novels utilize different strategies to depict human lives. I think they are arguing about whether which strategy more accurately portrays human life.
