Hi, I was having some trouble with Assumption questions, so a little google led to this link, which discussed a strategy to handle assumption question.

The strategy is to treat assumption question as a weaken the argument question.

I tried it with a couple of questions that i got wrong and it worked. What do you guys think? Can someone explain the underlying logic why this strategy works...


The confusion is.. that

Premise + Assumption = Conclusion.

So an assumption should strengthen the premise and/or strengthen the conclusion. So it should be a strengthen the argument question .

If you negate the assumption, the assumption that is correct will weaken the argument.

The conditional relationship is like this:

Conclusion (true) ------> Assumption (valid)

Assumption (not valid)--------> Conclusion (not true)

To negate an answer choice here's an example. Lets say the answer says "the councilman always votes for gun control". The negated answer would say "the councilman does NOT always vote for gun control. Once you negate an answer, if that answer would weaken the author's argument, you have just discovered the correct answer.
