Three children ate 17 cookies altogether. Andrew ate more cookies than any other child. What is the smallest possible number of cookies that Andrew ate?
(A) 5
(B) 9
(C) 6
(D) 8
(E) 7

Andrew ate more cookies than any other child. So, the possible combinations can be:
(4, 6, 7) where 4, 6 are cookies that other two children ate and Andrew ate 7 cookies.
(5, 5, 7) where other two children ate 5 cookies each and Andrew ate 7 cookies.

The smallest possible number of cookies that Andrew ate should be 7.

The correct answer is (E).
