Guys...i have some confusion over selecting the answer in following type of questions...

Please correct me if i'm missing something...

Qn 1 : Is x > 5

option 1 gives : Yes
option 2 gives : No

My answer should be d...right ?

The next one is simple..just want to confirm...

Qn 2 : Is x > 5

option 1 gives : Sometimes yes and sometimes no
option 2 gives : No

My answer should be b...right ?

Please help!!

it's not from any of gmat material...

to make it more simpler....

option 1 resolves to x = 4
option 2 resolves to x = 6...

i guess answer should be d...

sounds confusing :wink:
if x has two results, 4 and 6, then x maybe greater than 5; thus the answer would be E!

ashish ur right in this case the answer would be D ...

...if the data sufficiency question is of the "IS" type ( eg is x> 5) then the answer could be a yes or a no .. in the example you have provided .. according to the first statement the answer is NO .. so the first statement is sufficient to answer the question is x>5

.. similarly according to the second statement the answer is yes .. so again the statement is sufficient to answer the questiion is x>5 ... sothe answer to the DS is D ...


@erdnah .. plz be dont under the impression that the 2 statement never contradict each other .. most of the times they dont contradict each other .. but there are questions in which u get 2 different answers using the 2 statements ..

oh, seems if i had the wrong perspective for this question... i took both statements together which led me to the answer E... but if u take a look on each statement alone - which is of course the right way - u are right!

in the mgmat courses i learned that the statements would never contradict each other :? perhaps they should mention such an exception.
