This is tricky...

Because the answers have boxes around them, you have to pick the answer that adheres to the rule stated at the beginning. The answer is 81, but it's really [27] because 27 is odd and therefore, you have to multiply by 3 to get 81.

Interesting... I had this same exact question, except the answers didn't have boxes around them. I got the question wrong and couldn't figure out why... I think others have had the same experience with this problem.

I don't know guys how you approached to this question, but what i think is that boxes just mean functions. Thus, when m is even --> [m] = 3m, but when odd --> m = (1/2)*m. Since, 9 and 6 are odd number, just multiply by (1/2) or divide by 2. At the end we have: ( 9 * 6 ) * ( 1/2) = 27.

here is my take the write answer is D.

box(m) = (3m) if m is odd
= (1/2)m if m is even

box(9) * box(6) = (9*3) * (6/2)
= 81

then looking at the answers

box(81) = 81*3 = 27
box(54) = 54/2
box(36) = 36/2
only box(27) = 27*3 = 81
box(18) = 18/2

hence the answer is D
