The nation's three military academies have seen a dramatic rise in applications, one
fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, increasing tuition costs at private colleges, and
improved recruiting by the academies.

(A) one fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, increasing tuition costs at private
colleges, and improved recruiting by the academies.
(B) one fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, tuition costs that have increased at
private colleges, and academies improving their recruiting
(C) one fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, private colleges that increased their
tuition costs, and recruiting improvements by the academies
(D) fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, tuition costs increasing at private colleges,
and academies improving their recruiting
(E) fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, increasing tuition costs at private colleges,
and academies improving their recruiting

OA is A

Focus on MEANING.

B, D and E: The academies have seen a dramatic rise in applications, one fueled by...academies.
Not the intended meaning.
The rise has been fueled not by the academies themselves but by the IMPROVED RECRUITING.
Eliminate B, D and E.

C: The academies have seen a dramatic rise in applications, one fueled by...private colleges.
Not the intended meaning.
The rise has been fueled not by the colleges themselves but by the INCREASING TUITION COSTS.
Eliminate C.

The correct answer is A.

Mitch,

I believe 'one' is referring to 'a dramatic rise'. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, if the options were as mentioned below, which one to choose?:

E) one fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, increasing tuition costs at private colleges, and improved recruiting by the academies.
F) fueled by a resurgence of patriotism, increasing tuition costs at private colleges, and improved recruiting by the academies.
- VK

One shud refer to 'a dramatic increase'.

Hard to Differentiate between the E and F options. :(
