Raymond purchased a package of ground beef at a cost of $1.98 per pound. If, for the
same amount of money, Raymond could have purchased a piece of steak that weighed 40
percent less than the package of ground beef, what was the cost per pound of the steak?

A. $4.95
B. $4.20
C. $3.60
D. $3.30
E. $3.10

Magical Cook, refer my appraoch -
40% less i.e. 3/5 of 1 pound of steak costs 1.98
so 1 pound of steak costs = 1.98 * 5/3 = 3.3
so imo D. What's the OA?

Magical Cook, refer my appraoch -
40% less i.e. 3/5 of 1 pound of steak costs 1.98
so 1 pound of steak costs = 1.98 * 5/3 = 3.3
so imo D. What's the OA?

40% = 2/5 so I'm confused about your approach magical cook.

I get 2.77. 1.98* 2/5 + 1.98 ~ 2.77...

Could you elaborate some more on this?

If anyone has a different solution I would need it now.

$1.98 buys 2/5 LESS than one pound of steak so it buys 3/5 of a pound. If 3/5 = $1.98, then 1/5 = 66 cents and five fifths = 5*66 = $3.30

Lets say total price of steak = x

1.98 is 60% of total Steak price

i.e 1.98 = 0.6x

Total price of steak = 1.98/0.6 = 3.3

We can let the number of pounds of ground beef = b, and thus the cost for the ground beef was 1.98b.

Since he could have purchased a piece of steak that weighed 40 percent less than the package of ground beef, we can create the following equation in which x = the cost per pound of steak:

1.98b = 0.6bx

1.98 = 0.6x

3.3 = x

Answer: D
