Comparison#16

by gmat_perfect » Sat Sep 25, 2010 2:27 am
Having finally reached a tentative labor agreement with its company's pilots, it must now be determined by the airline's board of directors how the airline can both increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than they did in the past.

(A) it must now be determined by the airline's board of directors how the airline can both increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than they did in the past
(B) it must now be determined by the airline's board of directors how the airline can both increase profits and must compete more effectively than in the past for customers
(C) the airline's board of directors must now determine both how to make the airline increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than they did in the past
(D) the airline's board of directors must now determine how the airline can both increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than it did in the past
(E) the airline's board of directors must now determine how the airline can both increase profits and also how to make it compete more effectively than in the past for customers

D?

A and B have modifier issues.C and E have sentence construction issues.

BTW is this question checking for comparison errors? It looks more like a modifier question.

(A) it must now be determined by the airline's board of directors how the airline can both increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than they did in the past (Should start with noun, the acting one)
(B) it must now be determined by the airline's board of directors how the airline can both increase profits and must compete more effectively than in the past for customers (Same as above as well missing...It
(C) the airline's board of directors must now determine both how to make the airline increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than they did in the past (It for Airlines....not they-board of directors )
(D) the airline's board of directors must now determine how the airline can both increase profits and compete more effectively for customers than it did in the past
-- best choice
(E) the airline's board of directors must now determine how the airline can both increase profits and also how to make it compete more effectively than in the past for customers

A, and B have modifier issue. Who is reached to agreement, not 'it' but 'the airline's board of directors'.

C is out because placement of both is wrong

E is wrong because 'and also' is wrong most of the times.

D is correct.

In the answer choice D, does the pronoun "it" refer to the "board" or "airline"?

gmat_perfect : it is certainly D .

A,B are out for misplaced modifier. Among, C,D and e , you can simple get to D by both X and Y idiom.

Please fire if you have questin , in particular, for this question .

Airline.
So we can expect the "airline" to "both increase profits and compete more effectively for customers". So, we do not presume that inanimate objects can not act the way humans do?
