Are these interchangeable? Or are there specific rules of which one to use when?

Hello,
According to me we use "Whereas" (Limited to TWO) within sentences to contrast two ideas, and "Compared" (Could be N numbers) is use to find the similarities or differences between two or more.

i think the basic difference lies in the fact that "whereas" is used only with clauses ,however "compared to" is used to compare nouns or nouns+modifiers.
