Although all the proceedings of the Communist party conference held in Moscow were not carried live, Soviet audiences have seen a great deal of coverage.

(A) all the proceedings of the Communist party conference held in Moscow were not carried live

A - Changes the meaning
B - awkward
C/D - usage of alive distorts the sentence

IMO E.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Note the placement of all in the sentence. It can include either zero proceedings or some which are carried live, but E always include only some that were carried live as in there is no ambiguity. The intention is to bring out that Soviet audiences have seen a great deal of live coverage - this cannot happen if all the proceedings were not carried live as said in A. Hope this helps !!!
