If 500 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to X and 400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to Y, which multiple of 100 is closest to X+Y ?
a) X is less than 500.

IMO - E.

Stmt 1 :

450 < x< 500 ( 500 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to X ) - Insuff

Stmt 2:

350< y < 400 ( 400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to Y) - Insuff

Stmt 1 and 2 :

800 < x+Y < 900. so x+y can take any values.

Answer: E

X will be between 451 and 549
Y will be between 351 and 449
X + Y will be between 802 and 998 i.e. could be 800 or 900 or 1000

Option 1: X < 500 - Insufficient
X will be between 451 and 499
Y will be between 351 and 449
X + Y will be between 802 and 948 i.e. could be 800 or 900

Option 2: Y < 400 - Insufficient
X will be between 451 and 549
Y will be between 351 and 399
X + Y will be between 802 and 948 i.e. could be 800 or 900

Option 1 + 2: Insufficient
X will be between 451 and 499
Y will be between 351 and 399
X + Y will be between 802 and 898 i.e. could be 800 or 900
