In City R, streets run either east-west or north-south, as shown on the map above. Blocks along east-west streets are 400 feet long and blocks along north-south streets are 200 feet long. If the width of the streets is ignored, what is the straight-line distance, in feet, from X to Y ?

(B) 1,000
(C) 1,200
(D)
(E) 1,600

Is it B? Make a right triangle and solve for C. 600^2 + 800^2=c^2

Ok, so since the blocks are 400 ft long east to west, going that direction from x to y is 800 (there are 2 blocks). Then, north and south the blocks are 200 ft long so from X to Y it is 600 ft (3 blocks). If you go west from X 2 blocks, then north 3 blocks, you hit Y. The question asks for the straight line distance, which if you draw it on the map would be the hypotenuse of a right triange. to solve for the hypotenuse, a^2+b^2=c^2.... a=600 b=800 (or, make it easy on yourself and a=6 b=8).
