The CIA is not a law enforcement agency, responsible for investigating crimes, but rather that of an intelligence agency whose mission is to gather information in service of national security.

A) crimes, but rather that of
B) crimes, but that of
C) crimes; it is that of
B) crimes, but rather

Hi nahid078,

This SC offers a Comparison by using a 2-part phrase, which means that we have to compare "like" things and do so in Parallel "format."

1) Comparison: The 2-part phrase in question is "not _____, but _______." The first part of the sentence gives us the "not _____" the second part of the sentence must gives us the "but ______." Eliminate C and E.

2) Parallelism: The Parallelism is built into the comparison - "not A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY" is the first phrase that must be paralleled by the second phrase. The second part of the sentence gives us "but....AN INTELLIGENCE AGENCY", so we don't need anything else to complete the parallelism. Eliminate A and B.

Final Answer: D
