Rather than accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, Christopher Columbus was sent by the king and queen of Spain to see if he could reach India by sailing west.

I have a very specific question for C. The explanation in MGMAT says that instead of is comparing verb Accepting with Sailed.

In my opinion both accepting and Sailed are not verbs because they do not use a to be verb, Sailed is a modifier and Accepting also seem a modifier. I am not saying that choice C is correct but I am just questing the explanation.

Any thoughts?

I agree with you partly .

In the context of this sentence "accepting" is not a verb , you are right since it dose not have a BE form with it .

In fact its a participle acting as an ADJECTIVE modifying the noun WISDOM .

On the other hand Sailed is a VERB .

Christopher Columbus[Subject ] sailed[Intransitive Verb] west[is not the object of the verb , nor is a complement to the subject] to see [prepositional phrase].

ex : The geese fly south .

Please correct me if I am wrong.
"Know thyself" and "Nothing in excess"
