OPTION A:- INCORRECT
The underlined sentence is an independent clause that can stand on its own, therefore, immediately after the last comma, a verb cannot follow it again. Also in this option, the use of 'was'does not clearly show that one event occur before another.

OPTION B:- INCORRECT
It has some similarities with option A above as a verb cannot begin the second independent clause after comma, a conjunction is needed to connect the two clause.

OPTION C:- CORRECT
This option puts all features in place. First of all, the use of a conjunction to link the two verbs. Secondly, the pronoun 'it' is an antecedent of noun china
so it remains singular not like the options below that introduced it with a plural pronoun.

OPTION D:- INCORRECT
Even though this option connects the two independent clause with the right conjunction. It seems wrong when the pronoun that acts as the antecedent of china. they is a plural pronoun. China is a country that compromise people but it is regarded as a singular entity in this case.

OPTION E:- INCORRECT
Watch out for the similar error that happened in option D above. Singular noun needs a singular pronoun. "they had been united" emphasis on they which is a plural pronoun used against a singular noun China
