I was a clinical director at a local non profit organization until 2 years ago when my daughter was born and I quit my job to be a stay at home mom. During the first year, I stayed on as a consultant with my previous employer working limited hours. I stopped after a year when my daughter started to take less naps and it became impossible to schedule conference calls or get any serious work done during her waking hours. Prior to being a stay a home mom, I worked for about 8 years. I have an undergrad degree from a top 10 university and a master's degree in counseling from a top 5 school. I am now thinking about an mba program to help me change career direction and climb the management ladder in the philanthropy area. Does being a stay at home mom give me less chance of being admitted? will it be better to get back to the work place first and apply after a year?
I just bought my gmat prep book so don't know how well I'll do on the GMAT yet.

Hi,

According to us, the mere fact that you took a break to raise your child will not at all affect your chances at B School. In fact, the adcom understands the situation of 'motherhood' and how it is all so important that your child is given undivided attention. Raising a child in itself is a very huge responsibility and managing work with it side by side can be an issue for many.

How you project this departure from work, in terms of how well you are able to correlate your pregnancy and the experience of raising your child with how you slowly and gradually reduced workload, would be crucial. All in all, you shouldn't worry about your motherhood and a consequent leave from work having a negative impact on your prospects. If you are able to start working now and can show that you are currently employed, that would off course add some weightage.

Concentrate on your GMAT score and your acads seem good for a competitive B School. Your work experience is also substantial and thus all in all, if well tailored, you would be competitive at many B Schools.

Hope this helps. All The Best.

Regards,
