23. Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.
(A) extending
(B) extends
(C) extended
(D) it extended
(E) is extending

C for me. Is the only parallel.

In D 'it' is unnecessary.

A is better than C. "spawned" and "extending" both work for tentacles...which is spawned and extends....here by dropping which, we get spawned and extending...so A. Any other thoughts?
Looking for 780~

Answer is A.

In choice C, "extended" seems parallel to "spawned", but it would mean, it only extended in the past when the fungus still lives on in the present.

This is called superficial parallelism by MGMAT. Just because we had spawned for the first verb does not mean that we need a second verb in the past tense.

The second verb is actually a result of the first verb and needs a ing form.
