How many ways can 3 pieces of candy given out to 4 kids ?

4C3 = 4!/1! * 3! = 4 ways

Alternative Explanation:

A, B, C, D are the Kids and 3 candies can be distributed among them as

ABC

ABD

ACD

BCD

Therefore it is 4 ways.

Since it is not given how many candies can be given to any one. it can be assumed that the any particular kid can be given 0-3 candies. Therefor answer would be 4^3.

I wonder if this approach is correct.
I found this formula on BTG:

"distributing n identical things among r persons such that any person might get any number ( incl 0) is n+r -1 C r-1"

If I apply this I get 20.

Pls comment.

thanks
