I am confused about "calendar days". I know we can not take GMAT again in the next 30 consecutive calendar days. Does the beginning of a new year mark the start of new calendar session?

Nop. The difference in days between 2 GMAT attempts should be a minimum 31 days. If you are taking the test on 20th, don't plan on retaking it yet. Give yourself a chance. Don't shut the doors on getting your target score by thinking about the retake before actually appearing for the test. Good Luck!!

karanrulz4ever is right!
31 "calendar" days. The "calendar" part means that every day counts. So you can take a test on the 20th and then again no earlier than the 21st (depending on the month). With December to January this should be possible so you could retake on January 21st. "Calendar days" is as opposed to "Business Days" where only Monday through Friday would count.
Do keep in mind that if you do not show up on Dec. 20th then you can retake at any time. But once you show up and check in that counts as an attempt and you have to wait 31 days.
