Cambodia remains being a largely underdeveloped country because virtually all educated citizens were slaughtered during the regime of Pol Pot.

a) remains being
b) is still remaining
c) is being
d) remains
e) remains still
OA D , however if a choice (f) still remains was there would choice (f) have been preferred over choice (d) ??
Both D and F would not have been provided since they are both grammatically correct. However D would still be preferable, because "still remains" is actually redundant - "remains" by itself already conveys the fact that Cambodia is still like that :)

Answer:

Remains is appropriate.

"Still remains" alters the intended meaning of the sentence because "still remains" means Cambodia was largely underdeveloped country in the past and now it is also so. But from the sentence we can not infer that.

So, answer is D.
