Cafeteria CR

Expert replies
by youcan » Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:41 am
Cafeteria patron: The apples sold in this cafeteria are greasy. The cashier told me that the apples are in that condition when they are delivered to the cafeteria and that the cafeteria does not wash the apples it sells. Most fruit is sprayed with dangerous pesticides before it is harvested, and is dangerous until it is washed. Clearly, the cafeteria is selling pesticide-covered fruit, thereby endangering its patrons.
Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
(A) The apples that the cafeteria sells are not thoroughly washed after harvest but before reaching the cafeteria.
(B) Most pesticides that are sprayed on fruit before harvest leave a greasy residue on the fruit.
(C) Many of the cafeteria’s patrons are unaware that the cafeteria does not wash the apples it sells.
(D) Only pesticides that leave a greasy residue on fruit can be washed off.
(E) Fruits other than apples also arrive at the cafeteria in a greasy condition.

IMO: B

Statement - The apples are greasy
Statement - The cafeteria receives the apples in the greasy condition
Statement - Most fruit is sprayed with dangerous pseticides before harvest and are dangerous until washed

Conclusion - the cafeteria is selling apples with pesticide on them

(A) is not really an assumption, it was already stated slightly different in the passage

(B) is the best answer, it assumes pesticides have a greasy residue

(C) is outside of the scope

(D) irrelevant

(E) irrelevant

What is the OA?

Is it (E)

Conclusion is " cafeteria is selling pesticide-covered fruit, thereby endangering its patrons". Hence assumption should relate these.
Apples and greasy-ness are just examples of such.

Is that your opinion or the answer?

I am touched by your detail explanations. And following are my thoughts:

1. I believe the conclusion of the passage is patron's heath is endangered. Assuming that cafeteria does not wash apples, and apples b4 harvest are sprayed with pesticides and must be washed to ensure safety.

I agree with your reasons for elimination of B, C, E. my answer to this question is actually A. The reason is that those apples will really be dangerous if they were neither washed AFTER HARVEST BEFORE DELIVERY nor washed AFTER DELIEVERY.

I am not sure whether I have made a point for you. Hey, its always a opportunity to learn, right?

I would go with 'A' because the conclusion is "Clearly, the cafeteria is selling pesticide-covered fruit, thereby endangering its patrons." and the assumption laid out in 'A' leads to this conclusion.

What 'B' states is more of an information but that does not leads to the conclusion.

The apples that the cafeteria sells are not thoroughly washed after harvest but before reaching the cafeteria...

check out that bold part....means apples are washed upto some limit...not completely....

Ans should be B

The questions is Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

The conclusion assumes the greasy condition is a result of the pesticides and nothing else. This assumption is exactly what (B) states IMO.

It would really help if the original poster would provide the OA.

I think Your reasoning went too far, the original message mentioned that the apples would be safe until they are washed, but they did not specifically say thoroughly washed. If the passage did, I would agree with on answer choice B.

Answer A

by amitk7771 » Fri Aug 29, 2008 4:22 am
IMO A.

Think about NOT A --> The apples that the cafeteria sells ARE thoroughly washed ....

If NOT A directly destroys the conclusion then IT IS the Assumption.

"A" also says... "but before reaching the cafeteria."

Wouldn't that mean... apples are not thoroughly washed after harvest but they are before reaching the cafeteria? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
