Cézanne’s art

by Dean Jones » Sun Nov 20, 2011 7:03 am
Dear Friends,

I'm having problems in answering the following question. Please help.

Cézanne's art inspired the next generation of artists, twentieth-century modernist creators of abstract art. While
most experts rank Cézanne as an early modernist, a small few reject this idea. Françoise Cachin, for example, bluntly states that such an ascription is "overplayed," and says that Cézanne's work is "too often observed from a modern point of view." Which one of the following statements is most strongly supported by the information above?

A. Cézanne's work is highly controversial.
B. Cézanne was an early creator of abstract art.
C. Cézanne's work helped to develop modernism.
D. Modern art owes less to Cézanne than many experts believe.
E. Cézanne's work tends to be misinterpreted as modernist.

OA after some discussions.

Regards
Deano.

At times if you search the question on BTG, it might save a lot of time for you.

This question is an inference type in which you must be able to show that the answer must be true based on the statements in the argument - so you are looking for words that mean the same thing as a connection.

A) Highly controversial would have to relate to "a small few reject this idea" - this is not a connection.
B) "early creator" woudl have to be supported by some statement of the art he created - the best there is is that the inspired modernists - this is not a good enough connection.
C) "helped to develop" would have to relate to "inspired the next generation" helped to create and inspired are a close match and the best we have thus C is correct.
D) "owes less" is a judgement that is not made in the argument
E) Tends to be misinterpreted is only the opinino of Cachin - thus not a match for the entire argument.
