Source: — Sentence Correction |

ENIAC is the subject here. By the late 1940s, ENIAC, the first electronic digital computer, was able to compute...
The first electronic... is a modifier.

Option A - incorrect
Here, 'Computer' is supposed to be a modifier, but it's taking the action 'was' which changes the meaning of the sentence.

Option B - incorrect
'Was' which after the second comma modifies the wrong subject. This causes a change in the meaning of the sentence.

Option C - correct
The subject 'ENIAC' and verb 'was' are used correctly. Also, the modifier 'the first electronic digital computer' modifies appropriately. Hence, the answer choice is correct!

Option D - incorrect
This has the same issue as option A. 'being' used in the sentence is incorrect. Hence, it gives the sentence a wrong impression.

Option E - incorrect
Using the phrase 'and was' is wrong because it gives the sentence an incorrect representation of the intended meaning.
