In this sentence, the author's intended meaning is that not only were they able to turn gas into solid, they also created a semi-conductor related to silicon.

Option A- INCORRECT
It equates 'were able to transform' (infinitive verb) to 'creates'. It is wrong because it doesn't say what the scientist did independently.

Option B- INCORRECT
It creates a parallelism between 'were able to transform' to 'creating' (participle)

Option C- CORRECT
We were able to understand that the scientist 'transform' to ''creating (participle)

Option D- INCORRECT
This sentence is trying to compare 'to transform' (infinitive form of verb) to 'creating' (participle) it doesn't have much logic on it .

Option E- INCORRECT
This option is wordy. It repeats the verb 'were' unnecessarily
