According to the undashed line on the chart:
Nonfiction in 1984 = 40%.
Nonfiction in 1987 ≈ 58%.
Thus:
Percent increase from 40 to 58 = (difference/original) * 100 = (18/40) * 100 = 45%.

The correct answer is A.

The sales figure of nonfiction titles is 40 thousand books in 1984 and approximately 57 thousand books in 1987.

The percent increase is:

(57 - 40)/40 x 100

17/40 x 100 = 1700/40 = 170/4 = 42.5 percent

Answer: A
