Bucket A is 1/4 full of water and bucket B, which has three times the capacity of bucket A, is 3/4 full of water. If all the water in bucket A is poured into bucket B, then bucket B will be filled to what fraction of its capacity?

A. 1
B. 1/2
C. 5/6
D. 11/12
E. 7/6

Please assist with above problem.

Let the capacity of A = 4 liters.
Since A is 1/4 full, the amount of water in A = (1/4)(4) = 1 liter.

Since the capacity of B is 3 times that of A, the capacity of B = 3*4 = 12 liters.
Since B is 3/4 full, the amount of water in B = (3/4)(12) = 9 liters.

After the 1 liter of water in A is poured into B, the total amount of water in B = 1+9 = 10 liters.
Resulting fraction:
(total water in B)/(capacity of B) = 10/12 = 5/6.

The correct answer is C.

let capacity of A : x
water in A = 1/4*x
capacity of B = 3x
water in B = 3x*3/4

water is poured from a to B = (1/4)x + 3x(3/4)
= x*10/4 = x*5/2
water in B = x*5/2

water/total capacity = x5/(2*3x) = 5/6

so C

Hi alanforde800Maximus,

This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES.

We're told that Bucket A is 1/4 full of water... Let's TEST...

Bucket A capacity = 4
Bucket A currently holds = 1

Next, we're told that Bucket B has 3 TIMES the capacity of Bucket A and is 3/4 full...

Bucket B capacity = 12
Bucket B currently holds = 9

Finally, we're told that all of the water in Bucket A is poured into Bucket B...

Bucket B now holds (9+1) out of a capacity of 12 = 10/12 = 5/6

Final Answer: C
