BTG practice questions: Burglary

by arora007 » Tue Feb 08, 2011 12:17 am
Statistics reveal that burglars are often drawn to a house that looks temporarily vacated. They are not apt to attempt a break-in if it looks as if someone is home. A burglar is generally not eager to meet face to face with a homeowner. Therefore, when I go on vacation, I always leave at least one light on inside the house, and I always feel that my property is safe.

Which of the following, if true, is the best criticism of the author's idea?

A)# Most burglars are average-looking people who blend in with the neighborhood.
B)# Many burglaries are committed during the day
C)# Police accounts reflect that burglars approach a house from the front, looking first for newspapers in the driveway or an empty garage.
D)# Many people who travel leave a dog in the backyard and a radio blastin
E)# Criminal files indicate that most burglars work in teams of two or more.
Naah this is not a 400-550 question!! its a B vs C, give ur choices!
IMO C.

The fact that was interesting to me is the usage of the keywords : Inside & Front. Argument Says light is used inside the home.
Now that C "introduces" a alternative scenario where the "initiation" of the theft starts from the front portion of the home!

IMO B as option C depends upon the assumption that author must have newspaper subscription as well as garage at his home..!!!

I Think B is a good option but not a fool proof answer as
Firstly
1)Experts have always asked us to be wary of "many".Many may not be enough
2)If Many were enough some burglaries may be committed in the night so leaving a light on inside the house could be a good ruse to discourage Burglars

Ill go with C as C says that Burglars actually look for clues other than lights to ascertain whether the occupants of the House are present or not. However i am a still a bit doubtful because the Option doesnt say the Burglars inspite of finding newspapers in the driveway or an empty garage are discouraged when they find the lights switched on.

The answer choice given is B.

all those, including me, would have had the logic

"Daylight and lights in the house could nullify eachother "

as per the OE

the word "first" in choice C, goes against the choice.
