The complex tax dispute between the Covered Bridge Mall and Harris Township is not likely to be adjudicated for several years, and, in the meantime, both sides are intent on creating difficulties for the other.

(A) both sides are intent on creating difficulties for the other

(B) both sides are intent on creating difficulties for each other

(C) each side is intent on creating difficulties for the other

(D) each side is intent on creating difficulties for one another

(E) the sides are both intent on creating difficulties for each other

OA is C

I was confused between B and C. Can someone explain me a rule, if there is any?

{A} - INCORRECT; the last part says "other" so we need "each side" as subject
{B} - INCORRECT; meaning issue.. this may mean that a side is creating difficult for itself as well.
{C} - CORRECT
{D} - INCORRECT; "one another" is used for more than two
{E} - INCORRECT; awkward.. we need subject "each side"

Hi Bharat,

This SC is a bit "quirky" and essentially comes down to "style" more than anything else. Here's how you can figure out the style/intent of the sentence:

Notice how the first part of the sentence mentions a "dispute BETWEEN the Mall AND the Township"? This implies that each is a singular entity and the dispute is between one and the other. For the sake of parallelism, I'd be thinking of keeping this style throughout the sentence.

So, I need an answer that deals with each entity ON ITS OWN. Eliminate A and B and E.

Between C and D, answer C seems more straight-forward ("for the other") while D seems "clunky" ("for one another")

Final Answer: C

In B, the meaning implied by both conflicts with that implied by each other.

Here, both implies that the Covered Bridge Mall and the Harris Township have a SHARED goal:
BOTH are intent on creating difficulties.

...intent on creating difficulties for EACH OTHER.
Here, for each other implies that the Covered Bridge Mall and the Harris Township have OPPOSING goals:
The Covered Bridge Mall is intent on creating difficulties FOR THE HARRIS TOWNSHIP, while the Harris Township is intent on creating difficulties FOR THE COVERED BRIDGE MALL.

Since both and each other convey conflicting meanings, eliminate B.
