Books used vs Practice Test

I am wondering if there is a correlation between Materials used and performance on their respective practice test.

For example, I took the GMAT prep test 1 and scored a low 22 on Verbal. I decided to study for a week SC with MGMAT, and after the week I took the first MGAT CAT and my verbal scored jumped to 34. being SC the best section by far.

the SC section was really easy; I would like to think I got better, but it could also mean that I was recognizing the patterns that MGMAT uses on its test making it easier.

Could it be that MGMAT CATs would be easier and inflate my score, because I'm using the MGAT guides to study?

I have long speculated that this is true. Different question writers will write in specific styles and they tend to repeat. This is why prep with "official" gmat materials is so important.
