Among the objects found in the excavated temple were small terra-cotta effigies left by supplicants who were either asking the goddess Bona Dea's aid in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help.

(A) in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help
(B) in healing physical and mental ills and to thank her for helping
(C) in healing physical and mental ills, and thanking her for helping

I will choose D
since the pattern is " aid to somebody" when it is used as a noun while in verb role, the pattern is 'Aid sb'.. then the parallel structure is also correct
aid to heal...... or to thank....

Parallelism: Either x OR y,so options with "asking... or... thanking" is correct. Options A and E remain.


A) in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help
(E) to heal physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help


AID IN HEALING is correct idiom. See MGMAT SC guide idiomlist. I couldnt find any other way to reach the answer. If there is any, please comment.


SO the answer is A.

I understand the parallelism between either X or Y. ie. either asking or thanking


However, I got confused by the "to heal" vs. "in healing" construction. A vs. D. Why is A better than D?

I had a look at the idiom list in the mgmat but I couldn't find the idiom "aid in healing".
Could someone please clarify why "aid in healing" is better than "aid to heal" ?
